Italian medical Successful Artificial Heart on Baby

Italian doctor in March managed to embed an artificial heart to the smallest 16-month baby before the baby is receiving permanent organ donations, said the hospital performed the operation.


"In March, the world's smallest artificial heart implanted at the Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome," said Antonio Amodeo, a senior hospital official, said in a statement.


"The device, titanium pump weighs only 11 grams and is able to stand on the blood flow to 1.5 liters per minute, is used in case of emergencies in infants 16 months of suffering dilation myocardiopathy with a serious infection of the previously implanted ventricular assistance."


Artificial heart allows the infant, whose identity and gender was not mentioned, to survive for 13 days before receiving a heart transplant a real baby.


"Today, after more than one month of operation, the baby is healthy," the statement said.
