Latest Bionic Eye, New Hope for Blind People
A new technology will soon be visited world blind. New bionic eye will soon change the world of darkness.
A recent research results from scientists at Stanford University, California discovered a method that is more sophisticated than ever.
Prior art is the bionic eye (bionic eye) using a battery that is placed behind the ear with a connecting cable users.
But now researchers from Stanford, told the BBC (14/5), "We eliminate the cables and simplify the process elektronikanya".
Retinal implants that they have the ability to instill the same as solar panels, and its size is enough to put on the back of the eye.
Experiments using special glasses attached video camera to record what happens before and after the patients were given infrared light to the retina chip. The result, creating an electrical signal which is forwarded to the nerves.
The use of infrared light is because the natural light a thousand times less likely to give power to the implant.
The researchers say. "Because the retina is so thin and the implants without the cable, then the operation is simpler than other implantable retinal procedures".
"Retina implant is a promising wireless vision recovery for patients who became blind due to reduction in the retina", he concluded.
Reduction in the retina can be caused by macular degeneration (a condition where the macula [center of the retina and is the most vital part of the retina] suffered setbacks resulting in decreased visual acuity and is likely to cause loss of central visual function) and retinitis pigmentosa (a progressive decline on the retina that affects night vision and peripheral vision and eventually can cause blindness).
These implants have not been tested to humans, but it proved to work in mice.
